what to do when your baby gets high doses of vitamin D :

Hello every one,today we are going to discuss a very important issue: Vitamin D toxicity

we all know that newborn babies need vit D supplementaion to prevent rickets,as breast milk does not have the sifficient amount.

Dose of vit D :

1. for the breast fed babies we give 400 IU /day orally.
2. for the preterms,twins and infants of mothers with osteomalacia,we give 1000 IU/day orally.

Hypervitaminosis D is usually iatrogenic due to huge or repeated doses of vit D.

manifestaion of hypervitaminosis D:

1. anorexia
2. vomiting
3. dehydration
4. hypotonia
5. constipation

complication:

1. nephrocalcinosis
2. renal failure

investigations:

1. serum ca level.
2. ultrasound or xray abdomen for nephrocalcinosis.

Treatment:

1. stop administration of vit D or calcium supplements.
2. fluids for rehydration.
3. rachitogenic diet(poor in milk and high in carbohydrates and cereals).
4. in sever cases(serum ca >12 mg/dl) we give prednisone 2mg/kg/day.
