Hello everyone,
today we are talking about how to differentiate between common cold and tonsillopharyngitis 🤔
Common cold(Nasopharyngitis)
it is the most common infectious condition in childhood.
more than 200 virus can cause it but the most common one is Rhinovirus
this virus hits the mucosa of the nasopharynx causing sloughing of the epithilium and impairment of the cilia so compromising mucus clearance.
it also hits the submucosa causing vasodilation and cellular infiltration resulting in nasal obstruction.
Symptoms
- Low grade fever
- nasal discharge
- nasal obstruction and snoring 😴
- mouth breathing> dry mouth and soreness
It’s course taked about 3-5 days and subsides
Treatment
- Maintain good hydration and nutrition
- paracetamol for fever or ibuprofen not aspirin to avoid Reye syndrome
- relieve nasal obstruction by saline drops
Tonsillopharyngitis(sorethroat)
The majority of sorethroats are due to viruses and get better within days with no specific treatment but we fear from GABHS infection as it play a very important role in sore throat course , it may lead to Rheumatic fever or even glomerulonephritis if not treated adequately.
Symptoms
the same as common cold but more sever in addition to:
- Reddnes of the throat
- enlarged tonsils and may notice exudate on them
- anterior cervial lymphadenopathy (enlarged and tender)
Diagnose it by (throat culture >>Goldstandard)
treatment:
- Bed rest
- paracetamol for the fever
- moist the throat by hot drinks
- gargle with warm saline
- specific antibiotic for GABHS group a beta hemolytic streptococcus
It is important to know the difference
😁😁
